The Grain Barge started life as an engineless barge that used to be towed across the Severn Estuary from Bristol to Cardiff with its cargoes of barley & wheat. Built in 1936 by the Charles Hill shipyard, it is now moored opposite its original berth in Hotwells next to Brunel's SS Great Britain.

The Bristol Beer Factory bought and refitted the barge in early 2007. In keeping with its industrial heritage and the company's belief in reusing materials wherever possible, much of the structure within the vessel has been crafted using predominantly reclaimed and recycled materials.

The Grain Barge has two bars. The main harbourside lounge and dining area is light & airy, with the upper 'al fresco' deck boasting a 270 degree view of the harbour. The "Hold Bar" function room provides a venue for live music and can be hired for private parties any day of the week except Fridays.

Holly Templer
Manager
Holly has been at the Grain Barge since October 2009 and is in charge of the day-to-day running of the pub. She organises the events we have here and hires all the smiley staff you see behind the bar.

After studying maths at Bristol University, Holly traveled to Italy and Australia and worked in many pubs and restaurants but never anywhere with such a fantastic view and a friendly atmosphere as here. In her spare time Holly enjoys cooking, mental arithmetic & talking to strangers in Asda.

Dee Hedd
Assistant Manager
Dee came from the deep dark valleys of Wales and joined the Grain Barge as a member of the bar team in February 2011 while studying for her degree. Overwhelmed with theories and literature she sadly left us during her final year to concentrate on the tasks at hand. After graduating in 2012 she jumped between a few jobs before realising there was a Barge-shaped hole in her heart and came back to us as assistant manager in November 2012. In her spare time she enjoys heated discussions on gender-related issues, watching films, reading, yoga and a good old night out!

Lisa Thomas
Assistant Manager
Lisa has worked in the hospitality industry since the age of 14 and moved to Bristol from Cornwall in 2009 to study Education at UWE. During her time at University she sang lead vocals in a band, which took her all over the world from Devon to Dubai. After Uni, she tried teaching, but soon realised that it is rather difficult to tell children off when they are bigger then you. She decided that food and drink were more her cup of tea, and came a-calling at the Grain Barge in May 2013. When she's not rocking hte boat, she enjoys uncoordinated dancing and drinking cider.

Cheuk Kong
Head Chef
Despite mastering the dark art of sugar craft at the tender age of 8, Cheuk dreamt of becoming a patisserie chef. He went on to achieve a MA at University of St Andrews, after which he spent the next 10 years doing a mixture of travel, work, marathons, work, triathlon, and then more work. Cheuk is fortunate enough to have worked in some of the best kitchens in the country before striking out on his own gaining recognition from the AA, Michelin and the Good Food guide which described his cooking as "modern British with a strong Gaelic emphasis". He is an Ironman and spends a lot of time looking at bicycle components.

Kit McKenzie
Music & Promotion
Live music promoter, sound engineer, deejay, charango player, poster designer, painter, cyclist & traveller. Kit oversees everything "music" at both Tobacco Factory and Grain Barge as well as other venues around Bristol and Bath and is committed to providing the best musical adventures to the community.

Dave Bain

Sarah Ford
Venues Manager
Sarah is responsible for overseeing the Grain Barge, the Barley Mow pub in The Dings, along with the Tobacco Factory Café Bar and Sunday Market.  She initially joined forces with George Ferguson in 2001 to set up the Tobacco Factory Café Bar and later took the Bristol Beer Factory’s Grain Barge and Barley Mow under her wing.  In her spare time she is busy growing vegetables, off road running and enjoying family life.
